Lacrosse Field Dimensions and Markings Explained
Long before two teams take the field, the field itself has already done a lot of the work of organizing the game. Every crease, sideline, and painted box exists because a governing body specified an exact measurement for it, and once those lines have meaning, a confusing patchwork of paint turns into a readable map of the game in progress. USA Lacrosse and World Lacrosse both publish official diagrams for exactly this reason, and for a Boulder County parent watching a first game from the sideline, learning that map makes the whole sport easier to follow.
How Big Is a Lacrosse Field?
Field size is the first thing that surprises a new spectator, because lacrosse fields are noticeably larger than a soccer pitch or football field laid out for the same age group. A detailed specification guide published by Western Australia's Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries — the kind of technical document a facility manager uses to build a compliant field from scratch — lays out a men's field lacrosse playing area at 110 meters long by 60 meters wide (roughly 120 yards by 66 yards), with the boundary marked in white lines the entire way around. The long boundary lines are called side lines; the boundaries at each end are end lines. Soft, brightly colored cones mark the four corners of the field along with several other reference points described below.
Women's lacrosse uses a range rather than one fixed size: the same specification guide puts the women's playing area at 91.4 to 110 meters long (100 to about 120 yards) and 55 to 60 meters wide (roughly 60 to 66 yards), again bounded by four corner cones. That range exists because women's field lacrosse, unlike the men's game, doesn't fix the field at one exact size — venues are allowed some flexibility within those limits.
Exact current dimensions can vary by level of play and by which rulebook governs a given game, so for the specific field a CHSAA team or a youth program plays on, USA Lacrosse's own field diagrams are the definitive current source to check.
The Goal and the Crease
At the center of each end of the field sits the goal — two vertical posts joined by a rigid crossbar. Per the same facility specification guide, the posts are 1.83 meters apart (about 6 feet) and the crossbar sits 1.83 meters off the ground, all measured to the inside edge. The goal posts and crossbar are 5.1 centimeters (about 2 inches) square or round, and finished in silver, white, or orange so they stand out against the field. The goal itself is centered between the side lines and placed 12 meters (about 13 yards) in from each end line — well clear of the boundary, which is why a ball that sails past the goal often stays in play behind it.
Around each goal is the crease: a circle drawn using the midpoint of the goal line as its center point and a radius of 2.74 meters (about 9 feet). The crease marks the goalkeeper's protected space — the area a spectator will notice opposing players carefully avoiding, since the goalkeeper is the only player generally permitted to stand inside it while the ball is live. It's usually the single most visually obvious marking on the entire field, which makes it a good first landmark for a new fan learning to read the layout.
Restraining Lines, Wing Areas, and Substitution Boxes
Two zones further out from the goal are less obvious to a first-time viewer but do a lot of the work of keeping the game organized. In each half of the field, a line is marked from side line to side line, 18 meters (about 20 yards) out from the goal line — commonly called the goal area line, though it functions the same way many rulebooks describe a restraining line: the space between that line and the end line is the goal area, one of the zones the sport's positional rules use to keep a minimum number of players on each side of the field at all times.
Wing areas sit closer to midfield. Wing lines run parallel to the side lines, marked 18 meters out from the center of the field and extending 12.5 meters (about 14 yards) to either side of the center line. The strip between each wing line and the nearest side line is the wing area — the space where players not directly involved in a faceoff are required to line up until possession is decided, which is part of why a faceoff scrum looks like it's happening inside a defined lane rather than open field. Along one sideline — the same side as the timer's table — a further pair of 9-meter (about 10-yard) lines mark the special substitution area, extending out from points 6.5 meters (about 7 yards) from the center line. This is the literal "box" most people mean when they talk about players substituting on the fly during live play, distinct from the penalty box used for personal and technical fouls covered in our penalties guide.
Center Field and Line Widths
The exact center of the field is marked with an X equidistant from both side lines, and it can also be marked with a 10-centimeter square in a color different from the center line itself. That center line is deliberately the heaviest line on the field — 10 centimeters wide and marked as an "extra heavy" line perpendicular to the side lines — while every other line on the field (apart from the goal lines, which match the width of the goal posts) is a uniform 5 centimeters wide. Women's field markings follow a slightly different standard width of 5.1 centimeters, with all lines recommended to be painted white. These aren't cosmetic details — a facility that gets line widths wrong can create a field that technically doesn't match the rulebook's spacing calculations for areas like the crease or the goal area.
Buffer Zones and Spectator Space
Women's lacrosse fields also specify buffer space beyond the boundary itself, which is worth knowing if you're wondering why a sideline crowd at a game is kept farther back than you might expect. The specification guide calls for a 2-meter safety zone beyond the opposite sideline from spectators, and 2 to 4 meters of clearance beyond the end lines from any natural or artificial obstruction — trees, fences, bleachers, or a running track. Spectators are asked to stay at least 4 meters back from the side lines and are generally not permitted directly behind team benches, the scorer's table, or the end lines unless permanent seating is provided. Behind each goal line, the same guide calls for 12 meters of open playing space running the full width of the field — room for a loose ball or a goalkeeper's clearing pass to travel without immediately running out of room.

Because men's and women's lacrosse are governed by separate rulebooks with different contact and stick-checking standards, treat this table as a structural comparison rather than a claim that every rule maps one-to-one between the two games — USA Lacrosse publishes the current diagrams for both separately, and they're worth checking directly for a specific level of play.
How a Field Actually Gets Marked
Getting these dimensions right on an actual field is its own technical job, which is why USA Lacrosse keeps its rules and field-diagram resources together for groundskeepers and facility managers marking a shared multi-sport field — a common setup at parks and school complexes where a lacrosse layout has to coexist with soccer or football lines painted on the same turf. That's part of why the crease, wing areas, and goal area lines all use precise, specified distances rather than eyeballed placement: get one measurement wrong and every other zone that's calculated relative to it — the crease radius from the goal line, the wing area from the center line — shifts out of spec along with it.
Reading the Field in Boulder County
None of this needs to be memorized before a first game — most of it clicks naturally once a parent or new player starts connecting a painted line to what it controls on the field.
